Little Armando has been living with severe kidney disease for two years. He is connected to a dialysis machine every night - his blood is purified for 13 hours. Only a kidney transplant can give him a life without tubes and machines.
In Poland, where his family is hoping for an early transplant, everyone is automatically an organ donor - unless they expressly object. This significantly increases the chances of receiving a donor organ compared to Germany, where organ donation is only possible after active consent.
But hope comes at a price: all costs - from the operation and hospital stay to pre- and post-operative care - have to be covered by the family themselves. The family expects to pay around 100,000 euros.
Armando is not alone. His siblings Solinha and Antonio attend our school - and so it became clear that we wanted to help too.
We collected donations with great participation - at the open day, on anti-bullying day and with a cake bazaar. Because, as his mother Sandra Thuan says:
"It's about a self-determined life for our Armando - without tubes in his body, without machines that keep him artificially alive. He should simply be allowed to be a carefree child."
Together we are setting an example of hope and humanity - for Armando and his future.
